It was the first in Cebu, the first in the Philippines, and most probably the first in the World.
A successful event as evidenced by the photos and stories all over the papers and online social networking sites, but little is known about how it was conceptualized, planned, worked on, and implemented.
Here’s what happened behind the scenes (based on my own perspective and without the boring minute details)

During the recently concluded Century Properties Ultramarathon last November 19, 2011, my mentor Edward and I had the privilege of supporting a friend and training partner attempting to finish the 100km + 4.5km cooldown.
Inside our cozy airconditioned support vehicle, we got to observe runners from a different perspective.
What factors can help a runner have a bigger chance of finishing his/her dream?
A tragic incident that shook the running community of Cebu.
Ultrarunner Champion Melinda Ponce, an inspiration to so many runners in Cebu, was killed yesterday (Oct. 16, 2011) at her home in Talisay.

A run is going to be held this Sunday Oct. 23, 2011 at Ayala Center Cebu in honor of Melinda Ponce and all proceeds will go to the family.
I joined 50+ other ultrarunners in a run from Mandaue City to the Municipality of Catmon yesterday. Total distance would be around 50km.
Thoughts of not being able to do the distance never entered my mind days before the race. I even tapered on race week to reserve some energy and be fresh on the day of the race.
But I suffered through the latter part of the course. I was completely drained mentally and physically. All I wanted was for the race to end.
In less than 2 weeks, more than 200 runners will be running from Toledo City to Cebu City in the frontRunner Coast to Coast Ultramarathon 65km. It is named as such because Toledo and Cebu are on opposite sides of the island of Cebu. It traverses the whole of Transcentral Highway with killer uphills and downhills.

I’ve done my training according to plan, oh ok, not exactly all of it but I think the long runs will be what will matter most while staying injury free.
It’s now time to taper.
I thank the Lord for keeping me and my running buddies safe during our runs.
To my ultra-partners Edward and Richard, to Katol, Doc Benjchz, Ian, Abby, Boying, Gifford, Rodney, Christian, Doc Willie, Max, Michael, Joerick, Joel, Noy Adol, and so many other friends who will be running the race I say;
we’ve DONE the training,
we WANT this so much we can taste it,
we WILL finish strong,
and most importantly, we will have FUN!
BRING IT ON FRONTRUNNER!! 🙂
